How to Manage Calla Lily Summer

Calla lilies are beautiful summer flowers that bloom in April and May. After flowering, their leaves gradually begin to yellow and wither, which is a natural part of the plant's life cycle. Once the leaves turn yellow, it's important to move the pots to a dry, shaded area to prevent rain and encourage dormancy. As summer approaches, remove the pot from its current location and store it in a cool, well-ventilated place to help the bulb rest. In early September, when the weather starts to cool down, you can carefully dig up the thick, healthy bulbs. The number of bulbs you plant depends on the size of the container. For an 18 cm pot, plant 1 to 2 bulbs; for 21–24 cm pots, 2 to 3 bulbs; and for 27–30 cm pots, 3 to 4 bulbs. Use a slightly deeper potting mix, water thoroughly after planting, and within about 10 days, new leaves should start to emerge. Calla lilies thrive in bright light and require regular fertilization. During the growing season, place them in full sun and apply a balanced fertilizer every 10 days or so. To encourage blooming, consider using a phosphorus-rich fertilizer in February to stimulate bud formation. These plants prefer warm conditions and need consistent moisture during the growing season, but avoid overwatering or allowing the soil to dry out completely. As temperatures drop in late October, bring the plants indoors to a sunny spot to protect them from frost. With proper care, calla lilies will regrow in the spring and produce elegant white blooms, adding beauty to your garden or home.
