Causes and Countermeasures of Fruit Cracking in Jinsixiaozao

Most jujube varieties tend to develop fruit cracks during the ripening stage, with the most severe cracking occurring when the fruit's skin begins to turn red and continues through full red maturity. This cracking not only affects the fruit's appearance but also increases the risk of pulp rot, leading to significant economic losses for growers. Below are the main causes of fruit cracking and effective control measures: First, the primary causes of cracking: 1. High temperatures and drought are major contributors. In northern jujube-growing regions, the fruit reaches the white-mature stage between mid-August and early September. During this period, if a drought occurs, high temperatures and excessive transpiration can cause the fruit to lose water faster than it can be replenished. This leads to daily burns on the fruit's surface. These tiny wounds, if exposed to rain or nighttime condensation, allow moisture to seep into the flesh, causing the cells to swell. As a result, the skin bulges around the burn site. Experience has shown that in dry years, when the rainy season ends early, fruit cracking becomes more common between mid-August and early September. 2. Farming practices also play a role. Many jujube farmers apply fertilizers uniformly across the orchard, often at shallow depths, which encourages shallow root growth. Most jujube roots are found in the top 0–20 cm of soil. During droughts, this shallow root system struggles to access sufficient water and nutrients, increasing the likelihood of fruit cracking. Studies have shown that orchards with deep-rooted systems and well-distributed soil moisture experience less cracking or none at all. Second, prevention and control measures: 1. Choose crack-resistant jujube varieties. Selecting suitable cultivars is one of the most effective long-term strategies. 2. Ensure proper irrigation during the fruit ripening period. Maintain soil moisture levels in the 0–40 cm layer at 14% or higher. If the level drops, provide additional water promptly. 3. Apply mulch to the soil surface. This helps retain moisture and regulate temperature, reducing stress on the trees. 4. Improve fertilization methods. Instead of broadcasting fertilizer, use techniques like trenching or acupuncture to encourage deeper root development, improving the tree's ability to absorb water and nutrients. 5. Apply boron and calcium supplements. These nutrients help strengthen the fruit's peel, making it more resistant to cracking. 6. Treat cracked fruits promptly. After cracking occurs, spray a bactericide such as DuPont Fuxing (diluted 8000 times) once or twice to prevent pulp rot. Field trials have shown that this treatment significantly reduces the incidence of rotten fruit following cracks.
