Fruit trees should be strengthened after fruit picking

Fruit trees often experience early leaf fall and secondary growth due to factors such as excessive fruiting, poor management, pests, diseases, and unfavorable weather conditions like high temperatures, droughts, and typhoons. For instance, late-season flowering in pear trees can significantly impact their health. When the tree accumulates nutrients instead of using them for growth during the second half of the year, it can lead to weakened development. Areas like Liyuan, Taoyuan, and other regions affected by autumn droughts may suffer from premature leaf drop, early flowering, and insect damage, all of which can severely reduce annual yields. Therefore, proper post-harvest management is crucial for fruit trees. At this stage, the energy from photosynthesis is no longer directed toward fruit production but rather toward flower bud differentiation, branch thickening, and tissue maturation—critical periods for nutrient accumulation. Maintaining healthy foliage is essential. A moderate amount of nitrogen should be applied, and a 0.3% to 0.5% urea solution can be sprayed alongside pest control measures. During dry periods, timely irrigation is necessary. Additionally, some upright, leggy branches should be pruned or pulled, especially those on the upper part of the canopy, to improve light penetration in the middle and lower parts of the tree. This helps develop strong branches and buds, laying the foundation for a high yield in the following season. Common pests affecting peaches, pears, and plums include the thorn moth, pear stem borer, longhorn beetle, and pear spotworm. Diseases such as rot and powdery mildew also pose significant threats. After harvesting, it’s important to apply one or two rounds of pesticide sprays to prevent infestations and disease spread. By November, all fruit trees should undergo pruning. It's also an ideal time to complete tasks like sealing the orchard, whitewashing the trunks, adding organic fertilizer, and planting green manure crops. These practices help ensure better harvests and greater profitability in the coming year.
