Our new home feels like a work in progress. It's that chaotic phase where everything is still unpacked halfway, and the kids have already turned some boxes into makeshift forts. Moving this past weekend went smoothly, thanks to some incredible friends who helped out. Now begins the exciting challenge of organizing, decluttering and decorating. One tip that has stuck with me over three moves in the last four years is keeping an essentials box ready for move-in day. Trust me, it’s worth its weight in gold! Whether you're relocating across town or across the country, packing a box with these must-haves will save you a lot of stress. Here’s what I recommend including:

First off, don’t forget toilet paper. Necessities come first, right? Alongside that, pack some fresh sheets, a couple of pillows, and maybe even a cozy blanket to make your temporary setup feel a bit homier. My mom always advised setting up the bed early—because trust me, there’s nothing worse than crashing on the floor after a long day of unpacking. The kitchen and living room? They can wait!

Next, toss in a shower curtain. Sure, it might seem inconvenient to carry, but believe me, once you’ve unpacked enough to notice the lack of privacy, you’ll be grateful for it. Also, don’t skip the fluffy towels, your favorite body wash, and lotion—they’ll feel like pure luxury after hours of unpacking and rearranging furniture.

Include a small stash of matches or a lighter, along with scented candles or an essential oil diffuser. Creating a warm ambiance instantly makes your new space feel more inviting. And let’s not forget practical items like pens and a notebook for jotting down to-do lists, shopping lists, and reminders. Moving day is chaotic, and having a pen and paper handy will save you headaches later.

Stock up on basic tableware—plates, cups, cutlery, napkins, and a cozy blanket—for your first-night picnic. Think of it as a mini date night in your new home. Light some candles, sip on coffee, and enjoy the cozy vibe.

Speaking of coffee, I highly recommend adding a Folgers® Iced Café concentrate to your essentials box. It’s super convenient for making iced coffee quickly—just mix it with almond milk or your choice of liquid. It’s a quick way to enjoy that familiar mountain-grown flavor without the hassle of setting up your coffee maker. Plus, Folgers® offers updates and deals you can stay updated on via their social media channels. For instance, their hazelnut Iced Café concentrate pairs beautifully with almond milk, but you can always customize it to your liking!

Other essentials include garbage bags, your laptop, phone chargers, and basic cleaning supplies like disinfectant wipes, dish soap, and hand soap. Hydration is key during a move, so pack a few bottles of water. And finally, don’t forget a cordless drill or a small toolkit for any minor repairs that might pop up. A first aid kit is also a must-have for those unexpected bumps and bruises.

If you’re moving further than a few blocks away, consider throwing in a change of clothes, pajamas, and underwear. You never know when you’ll need them! Just keep this box within reach—you’ll thank yourself later.
