Crocodiles are fascinating wild animals with significant research, ecological, and economic value. Classified under the order Crocodilia, they belong to the genus Crocodylus, which includes three species, eight genera, and 23 distinct types globally. These creatures are not only biologically rich but also hold great potential in traditional medicine and nutrition. Their meat, bones, organs, and bile are all valued for their health benefits.
Crocodile meat is packed with high-quality proteins, essential amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, and trace elements. Its bile, known for detoxifying properties, can help treat various conditions such as liver cancer, bladder cancer, and even food poisoning. It's especially effective for liver-related issues like fatty liver and cirrhosis. In Thailand, crocodile gallbladder is highly prized, particularly for women's reproductive health, often regarded as a cure-all.
The liver of the crocodile is believed to improve vision and nourish the body, helping with age-related eye conditions like cataracts. The heart has properties that support cardiovascular health, aiding in conditions like angina and coronary diseases. Crocodile bones are used to relieve rheumatic pain, while crocodile powder, rich in calcium and phosphorus, helps prevent osteoporosis and supports children’s growth.
Additionally, crocodile tail oil is known to enhance skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles, and improve overall skin health. It also helps manage allergies effectively. Despite these benefits, crocodile farming has faced challenges, including water pollution, poor feed quality, and suboptimal growth conditions, which have affected the reputation of farmed crocodile products.
To address these issues, Zhenshan Crocodile Breeding Co., Ltd. and Sihui City Science and Technology Demonstration Yard initiated a research project in 2002 focused on healthy crocodile farming. The goal was to develop sustainable and safe methods to produce high-quality, non-polluting crocodile products for consumers.
The breeding base is located within the Zhenshan Tourist Area in Sihui City, Guangdong Province, covering 400 acres. All crocodiles are raised using self-bred, fresh fish such as tilapia, oysters, and quail. Fish ponds are regularly replenished with clean mountain spring water from Zhenshan Mountain, ensuring optimal water quality.
The facilities include earth ponds for crocodiles and separate soil ponds for raising feed fish. The water quality is strictly monitored by a dedicated team, and all environmental factors are controlled to ensure a pollution-free environment. The base has been certified as a pollution-free agricultural production area by the Guangdong Marine and Fisheries Bureau.
Careful selection of healthy seedlings, proper feeding practices, and daily management measures contribute to the success of this project. Regular water testing, strict control over feed and medication use, and disease prevention strategies are implemented to maintain high standards.
After more than three years of operation, the results have been impressive. Crocodiles grow rapidly, with excellent meat quality and no major disease outbreaks. The product meets international safety and hygiene standards and is highly sought after in markets across China.
In conclusion, the success of this project lies in its commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly farming practices. With the right location, clean water, quality feed, and strict management, the crocodile products from this base are not only nutritious but also safe and environmentally responsible. This model could serve as an example for future crocodile farming initiatives worldwide.
