Paddy rice water weevil

The scientific name *Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus* Kuschel belongs to the order Coleoptera. This pest is found in several provinces, including Hebei, Guangxi, and Guangzhou.

It primarily infests crops such as rice, wheat, corn, sugarcane, barley, pastures, and various grassy weeds.

The adult beetles feed on the leaves, while the larvae damage the roots by creating holes, which leads to yellowing and wilting of the plants.

Morphologically, the female adults are about 3 mm long and covered with pale green to gray-brown scales. A large dark spot composed of black scales runs from the end of the thoracodorsal plate to the base. There is also a single dark spot along the elytra base, extending three-quarters of the way. The antennae are auburn, with six segments, a hairless base, and dense hairs at the tip. The anterior pronotal shield has no groove, and the middle legs have white long hairs. Eggs are cylindrical and white. The larvae are white, measuring up to 8 mm in length, with pairs of projections on the second to seventh abdominal segments. They go through four instars.

In southern regions, this species has two generations per year. Adults overwinter in fields, grasslands, and leaf litter. In early spring, they begin feeding on weed blades or inhabiting rice and other crops. At night, they climb to the tips of leaves, where they lay eggs in the underwater tissues of the plant. Each female can lay between 50 to 100 eggs over 6 to 10 days. Newly hatched larvae feed on the leaves for 1 to 3 days before falling into the water to damage the roots. The larval stage lasts 30 to 40 days. Mature larvae then attach themselves to the rhizosphere, forming soil pods and mucus-like structures. The pupal stage takes about 7 days. Long-distance spread occurs mainly through the transport of straw or other plant material, and adults can also be carried by wind or water.

For prevention and control, it's important to target both the rice water weevil and overwintering adults. In Hebei, adults typically climb onto weed plants in late April and mid-May. Applying 50% Inleflug EC at 500 ml per 667 m² mixed with 40 to 50 kg of water can effectively reduce their population. Alternatively, 3% Radiant granules or 3% methylisothiophos granules can be used at 1.5 to 2 kg per 667 m². The first generation of adults is highly phototactic and mobile, so insecticides should be sprayed around 8 PM in mid-July. Agricultural practices, such as timely plowing after harvest, help reduce overwintering survival rates. Promoting the use of 4% DJ compound granules at 3 kg per 667 m², applied 7 to 10 days after transplanting, can kill eggs laid near the water surface. This treatment has a residual effect lasting over 30 days and controls rhizosphere larvae with about 85% effectiveness. It also targets both Scarabaeidae and rice leafminers. Additionally, 20% Dowein Emulsifiable Oil at 30–40 ml or 40% chloraminofuran EC at 100 ml per 667 m² can be applied.
