Paddy rice water weevil

The scientific name *Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus* Kuschel belongs to the order Coleoptera. It is commonly found in provinces such as Hebei, Guangxi, and Guangzhou.

This pest primarily attacks a variety of crops including rice, wheat, corn, sugarcane, barley, pastures, and various grassy weeds.

The adults feed on the leaves, while the larvae damage the roots by creating holes, leading to yellowing and withering of the plants.

Morphologically, female adults are approximately 3 mm long and covered with pale green to gray-brown scales. A large dark spot composed of black scales extends from the end of the thoracodorsal plate to the base. There is also a single dark spot running from the base of the elytra to about three-quarters of its length. The antennae are auburn, with six segments and no hair at the base, but the tip is densely hairy. The anterior pronotum has no groove, and there are white long hairs on the middle tarsus. Eggs are cylindrical and white. The larvae are white, measuring about 8 mm in length, with paired projections on the second to seventh abdominal segments. They have four instars.

In southern regions, this species completes two generations per year. Adults overwinter in fields, grasslands, and under leaf litter. In early spring, they begin to feed on weed blades or inhabit rice and other crops. At night, they climb up to the tips of leaves, where they lay eggs within the plant tissues underwater. Each female can lay between 50 to 100 eggs over a period of 6 to 10 days. Newly hatched larvae feed on the leaves for 1 to 3 days before falling into the water and damaging the roots. The larval stage lasts 30 to 40 days. Mature larvae then attach themselves to the rhizosphere, forming soil-like cocoons. The pupal stage takes about 7 days. Long-distance spread occurs mainly through the transport of straw, but adults can also fly or be carried by water currents.

For prevention and control, it is essential to target overwintering adults. In Hebei, adults typically climb onto weeds in late April and mid-May. Applying 50% Inleflug EC at a rate of 500 ml per 667 m² mixed with 40–50 kg of water can effectively reduce their population. Alternatively, 3% Radiant granules or 3% methylisothiophos granules can be used at a rate of 1.5 to 2 kg per 667 m². The first generation of adults is highly phototactic and mobile, so spraying insecticides around 20:00 during mid-July is recommended. Agricultural practices, such as timely plowing after harvest, help reduce overwintering survival. Additionally, applying 4% DJ compound granules at 3 kg per 667 m² after 7–10 days of slow growth in paddy fields can kill eggs laid near the water surface. This treatment has a residual effect of over 30 days and controls rhizosphere larvae with about 85% effectiveness. It also helps manage both scarab beetles and rice leafminers. Another option is to apply 20% Dowein Emulsifiable Oil at 30–40 ml or 40% chloraminofurne EC at 100 ml per 667 m².
