Scientific Name: Lloydia tibetica
Common Name: Dog's Tooth, Takagi Rorty
Genus: Lloydia
Lloydia tibetica is a striking alpine plant native to several provinces in China, including Tibet, Yunnan, Sichuan, Gansu, Hubei, Shaanxi, and southern Shanxi. It thrives at high altitudes, typically between 2,300 and 4,100 meters, growing in forest understories, hillside grasslands, or wet meadows. This species is known for its delicate yet resilient nature, making it a popular choice for rock gardens and wall gaps.
The plant features small, non-swollen bulbs and has basal leaves that are flat in shape, while the axillary leaves are short and narrow. It produces 1 to 5 flowers per stem, arranged in two umbels. The flowers are usually apricot yellow to brownish yellow, with tepals measuring about 18mm in length. One of the distinguishing features is the cob-like pleats at the base of the inner tepals, which add to its unique appearance.
Lloydia tibetica can be propagated through sowing seeds or planting bulbs. It is relatively easy to grow once established and prefers well-drained soil with partial shade. Due to its compact size and attractive blooms, it’s an excellent addition to alpine gardens, especially in areas that mimic its natural habitat. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, this plant offers both beauty and a touch of the wild.
