Scientific Name: Lloydia tibetica
Common Names: Takagi, Rorty, Dog's Tooth Shell
Genus: Lloydia
Lloydia tibetica is a unique and rare flowering plant native to several provinces in China, including Tibet, Yunnan, Sichuan, Gansu, Hubei, Shaanxi, and southern Shanxi. It thrives at elevations ranging from 2,300 to 4,100 meters, typically growing in forest understories, hillside grasslands, or wet meadows. This species is known for its distinctive appearance and hardy nature.
The plant has small, non-swollen bulbs, with basal leaves that are flat and broad, while the axillary leaves are short and narrow. It produces 1 to 5 flowers per stem, arranged in two umbels. The flowers are usually apricot yellow to brownish yellow, with tepals measuring approximately 18mm in length. One of the most notable features is the inner tepal, which has a cob-like pleating at the base, giving it a unique texture and visual appeal.
Propagation of Lloydia tibetica can be done through sowing seeds or planting bulbs. It is well-suited for rock gardens, wall gaps, or alpine gardens, where its compact size and striking flowers can add an elegant touch. Due to its high-altitude origin, it prefers well-drained soil and partial shade, making it an ideal choice for gardeners looking to create a naturalistic, mountain-style landscape.
