Auspicious grass leaves evergreen

Scientific name: Reineckia carnea

Common names: Xiaoye Wannianqing, Song Shoulan

Family: Liliaceae

Category: Evergreen Grass

Morphological Characteristics:

This plant features rhizomes that grow underground, with leaves clustered in a rosette pattern. The leaves are typically banded or lance-shaped, dark green in color, with an acute tip and a contracted base that forms a stalk. It produces dense spikes of small, pink flowers that emit a pleasant fragrance. After cooking, the berries turn bright red and remain attractive for a long time.

The flowering period occurs from September to October, with erect, terminal spikes measuring about 6 cm in length.

Variants:

Silver-rim grass (var. variegata) has white or cream-colored edges on its leaves.

Native Distribution:

Reineckia carnea is native to Southwest China, South China, Central China, and East China.

Growth Habits:

It thrives in warm, humid climates and prefers semi-shaded environments. It is not particularly picky about soil conditions. In southern regions near the Yangtze River, it can survive winter outdoors, but in colder northern areas, it requires protection during the cold season.

According to ancient texts, "The leaves are blue and soft, and when they are green, they never wither. They are the most lovable, full of moisture and vitality."

There's also a poem about this plant: “A few green leaves, a little grass, quiet loneliness in the mountains, I don’t know the old age.”

In traditional Chinese art, it is often painted as sparse greenery between mountains and cliffs. These small plants are also known as “Su Xinlan,” symbolizing elegance and simplicity.

With its beautiful form and vibrant green color, Reineckia carnea is ideal for water culture in glass containers or goldfish bowls. Placed on a bar, coffee table, or desk, it creates a serene and artistic display—water in the bowl, stones in the water, roots nestled among the rocks, creating a peaceful harmony.

Cultivation Method:

First, Selecting Materials:

Choose healthy plants with dark green, vigorous leaves and no signs of pests. Carefully dig up the plant using a shovel, ensuring you lift as much soil as possible around the roots. This helps protect the root system and makes the transition to water culture smoother. The intact root system also adds visual appeal in transparent containers.

Second, Setting the Stones:

Use clean pebbles or decorative stones to create a base in the glass container. Place the plant upright, secure the roots with the stones, and fill the container with clear water until all roots are fully submerged. The aesthetic choice of stones enhances the overall look, allowing for personal creativity and expression.

Third, Maintenance:

Since the roots are constantly submerged in water, it’s important to change the water weekly to prevent odors. Adding a few drops of liquid fertilizer or potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution every two weeks can promote healthy growth. As it prefers shade, providing 1–2 hours of fluorescent light at night will support its photosynthesis needs.

History of Cultivation and Ornamental Use:

This plant has been cultivated in China for centuries, primarily for its foliage. Its unique shape, growth habits, and care requirements are described in classical texts: “Reineckia carnea, which fears direct sunlight, has soft, blue-green leaves that remain green all year round. In summer, it blooms with white and purple flowers, producing small red berries. Though the flowers are not showy, their presence brings joy. It can be planted in water, soil, or on stones, thriving in warm conditions. It pairs beautifully with solitary stones and mushrooms, making it a refined and elegant choice.”

In warm climates, it can be used as a ground cover, while in cooler areas, it thrives indoors. Its elegant form and vibrant green color make it a popular choice for placement in living rooms, studies, or conference spaces, often symbolizing good fortune and serenity.

Potassium Fulvic Acid

1. Definition:
potassium fulvate/potassium fulvic acid powder/flake is 100% water soluble fine powder, or shiny flakes, derived from natural young active leonardite with various functional groups, such as hydroxyl, carboxyl and phenolic hydroxyl, etc. Small molecular weight enhance its chelating capacity and enables it more easily to be uptook by the plant. It is organic chelator, ideal Soil Conditioner and natural plant growth stimulant.
2.Functions & Benefit:
1) Improve the soil structure& fertility, increase the soil buffering powder
2) Stimulate vigorous root growth
3) Immediately enhance nutrient uptake via the leaves and roots
4) Increase the utilization efficiency of fertilizer and pesticide
5) Increase PH buffering capacity & CEC cation exchange capacity of soil
6) Enhance plant resistance to disease, pest, cold, drought and dry
7) Increase the quality and yield of crops
8) Increase the germination of seeds and enhance development of radicles
9) Easily to be converted to liquid
10) Excellent for fertilizer coating, like UREA, NPK, etc
