As the reporter explored the Huaqiao Overseas Chinese Economic Zone, they discovered a variety of protected plant species, including the House Finch and several others. The area is rich in biodiversity, with lush greenery and an array of natural wonders that draw both locals and travelers alike.
Among the most fascinating sights were the hawksbills, which grow in the mountainous regions of the Jiudao Valley. These flowers are cleverly hidden among dense wild bushes, making them a delightful surprise for those who stumble upon them. Their structure resembles a bird: the central part looks like a head, with two black spots resembling eyes. The petals on either side stretch out like wings, while another petal extends like a tail, creating a complete image of a bird. From a distance, these flowers look like clusters of crows perched on branches, their blossoms opening in unison like a flock of birds gathering together.
Locals have shared a beautiful legend about the quack flower. According to the tale, crows once caused trouble by eating taro crops, frustrating local farmers. One day, Li Yun, a local figure, witnessed the damage and used a spell to bind the crows to the vines. They could only emerge during the Qingming Festival, but their claws were restricted from moving. Though they couldn’t eat rice anymore, the crows never left the valley. In time, they transformed into flowers, and the finch flower was born.
Scientifically known as *Pteris multifida*, the thistle flower is a second-class protected plant in China and has become increasingly popular as a wild ornamental species. It blooms from March to April, with a flowering period lasting about two weeks. This rare flower thrives in well-protected natural environments, requiring plenty of water and undisturbed ecosystems. Only plants over 30 years old are likely to bloom. The Jiukou Valley, a pristine sub-tropical forest, is one of the few places where this stunning flower can be found. Nearby, the Marabou Forest also hosts other rare species, such as the pheasant and golden retriever dog, highlighting the region’s ecological significance.
