In the summer of this year, our province has experienced an increase in hot and rainy weather. This combination has led to poor vegetable growth and a higher risk of pest and disease infestations. The high temperature and humidity create ideal conditions for issues such as root rot, leggy growth, and other undesirable plant conditions. These environmental factors not only hinder plant development but also contribute to the spread of diseases that can lead to plant death.
High humidity poses significant challenges for vegetable crops. When plants are exposed to prolonged periods of moisture, they tend to become waterlogged, which leads to leggy growth. This is especially common in eggplants and melon crops. Over time, the cell walls of these plants weaken, reducing their structural resilience. As a result, they become more susceptible to heat stress, which can cause cellular damage and sunburn. This not only affects plant health but also reduces yield potential. In addition, when the soil remains saturated for extended periods, the root systems suffer from oxygen deprivation, making them more vulnerable to root infections and soil-borne diseases. This often results in "dead trees" or sudden plant decline.
High temperatures further complicate the situation. Continuous heat combined with heavy rainfall poses a serious threat to autumn vegetable seedlings. High temperatures can disrupt normal plant growth, leading to wilting, stunted development, and even plant death. Moreover, excessive heat can interfere with flower bud differentiation, resulting in early flowering, fruit drop, and deformed fruits. These issues significantly reduce the economic value of the harvest.
To manage these challenges, several effective pest control measures can be implemented:
1. **Melon Locusts**: Apply 0.6% Excision at a dilution of 1250–1500 times.
2. **Aphids (Yellow Song Jumpers)**: Use 90% Trichlorfon Crystal at 800 times dilution. For prevention, apply 2–3 times, and in severe cases, combine with root irrigation.
3. **Diamondback Moth**: Apply 5% Rui Jin Special at 1000–1500 times or 5% Suppository EC at 2000 times.
4. **Caterpillars (Starscream)**: Mix 20% Wolfberry at 3000 times with 1% Insect Worm Light at 3000 times for effective control.
By implementing these strategies, farmers can better protect their crops from the adverse effects of extreme weather conditions and maintain healthy yields throughout the season.
