Hot season pigs

When the temperature rises to 35°C, pigs tend to eat less and gain less weight. As a result, during the high-temperature season, feeding strategies should be adjusted based on the type of pig and their specific physiological stage. This helps maintain productivity and health. Boars should be fed twice a day, with added green feed or a thinner mixture offered at midday. Breeding and physical activities should take place in the early morning or late evening when it's cooler. After breeding, avoid immediately spraying water or cold water on the pig’s body, as this can cause stress. From 1:00 to 3:00 PM daily, mist the pigs and the floor with water once, and limit lighting to 8–10 hours per day. If breeding numbers are low, reduce concentrate feeding to prevent over-conditioning and maintain good libido. Pregnant sows should primarily be fed roughage, with appropriate amounts of feed to avoid overfeeding. Keep the stocking density low, ideally 2–3 sows per pen. During late pregnancy and lactation, each sow should have her own space. Provide concentrated feed with some green feed, avoiding roughage. Feed them three times a day, with a thinner supplement in the middle. Spray water once, and add 1% to 1.5% baking soda and 0.3% salt to the feed. Also, avoid breeding during the hottest parts of the day. During the hot season, commercial pigs often experience reduced appetite and “inverted trough” behavior, which negatively affects growth. It's advisable to sell pigs before the hot season arrives. If they must stay, reduce the stocking density to ease heat stress. Nursing pigs and young pigs prefer to lie on wet ground. Monitor weather changes closely to prevent colds or diarrhea caused by sudden temperature drops. In addition, ensure clean and fresh water is always available. Adjust feeding schedules to cooler times of the day and provide shade or cooling systems where possible. Regular health checks are essential to catch any issues early. By implementing these strategies, farmers can better manage heat stress and maintain productivity throughout the summer months.
