Freshwater Whitefish Breeding Four Models

In Pukou District of Nanjing City, since the introduction of freshwater white pelicans in 1993, over a decade of cultivation and exploration has led to the development of four main breeding models: primary breeding, polyculture, two-year breeding, and fresh-breeding. Here is a detailed overview of each model: In the primary breeding model, farmers typically begin in February by stocking 150 catfish per kilogram, 50 carp per kilogram, and 400 grass carp per kilogram. By mid-May, the water surface is filled with approximately 1,500 freshwater white pelican fry. In the polyculture model, the setup starts in February with a mix of 150 catfish, 50 carp, 10 grass carp, and 1,500 catfish fry per acre. By May 10th, the pond holds around 600 freshwater white pelican fry per acre. The two-year breeding model involves a more extended cycle. In February, fishers stock 150 catfish, 50 carp, and 400 grass carp per kilogram. By May 10th, they collect about 1,000 freshwater white pelicans, and by July 10th, they release around 1,200 pelicans per kilogram into the water. In the fresh-breeding model, the process begins in February with 70 catfish and 30 carp per kilogram of water. By May 10th, the density increases to 1,000 freshwater catfish per kilogram of water per acre. On July 10th, they introduce about 50,000 green larvae per kilogram, and by July 30th, they add 10 larvae per kilogram. Finally, by the end of the month, about 5 fish are stocked per kilogram. These models have been refined over time to optimize growth, sustainability, and productivity in freshwater aquaculture. Farmers in Pukou District continue to adapt and improve these methods based on local conditions and market demands.
