It is caused by *Stylospora*, a type of fungus. The pathogenic fungus resides on the host plant through its mycelium and conidia, or it can survive in the soil with infected plant debris. When spring conditions become favorable in the following year, the conidia are released and initiate primary infections or cause reinfections, leading to the continuous spread of the disease. As a result, plants become weak and stunted. Alkaline soils are particularly conducive to the development of this disease.
The symptoms first appear on the leaves as grayish-white spots, with brownish-violet edges that form curled patterns. These lesions are generally larger than those caused by gray spot disease. Over time, numerous black spots develop on the affected areas—these are the conidia of the pathogenic fungus.
To manage the disease, proper care is essential. Keep the plants healthy by providing adequate warmth and humidity. They are not cold-tolerant and thrive best at temperatures between 18–24°C. Avoid intense sunlight during summer, but ensure they receive plenty of light in winter. Use well-draining, fertile soil, and water thoroughly during the flowering period. Fertilize every 15–20 days, and add phosphate fertilizer during blooming. Repot every two years to maintain healthy growth.
After pruning or cutting the leaves, treat the wounds with a 30% basic copper sulfate suspension diluted to 300 times. Additionally, apply a spray solution of 30% alkaline copper sulfate at 400 times dilution, or 47% Garnet WP at 800 times, and 70% Mancozeb WP at 500 times. Spray every 10 days for 2–3 applications to effectively control the infection.
