Autumn is a critical period for fattening fish fingerlings, as it not only helps them survive the winter more safely but also lays a strong foundation for their growth in the following year. During this time, fish farmers should focus on three main aspects to ensure optimal results.
First, adjusting the feed composition is essential to help fish gain weight efficiently. In the fall, it's advisable to increase the proportion of energy-rich feeds such as corn flour, soybean meal, and sweet potato flour while reducing low-energy options like bran. A recommended feed ratio could be 35% soybean meal, 25% rapeseed meal, 30% corn flour, and 10% bran. It’s best to process the feed into pellets for better digestion and nutrient absorption. If pellet production isn't possible, corn flour and bran can be fermented first before being mixed with soybean meal to form a lump, which can still provide adequate nutrition.
Second, maintaining stable water conditions is crucial during this season. The water level in the fish pond should be kept at its highest to ensure sufficient insulation and oxygen supply. The dissolved oxygen content should exceed 6 mg per liter, and the pH should remain between 6.5 and 8.5. These conditions help reduce fish activity, conserve energy, and promote fat accumulation. If the water becomes too clear or lacks nutrients, applying 2.5 to 5 kg of ammonium phosphate per acre can improve its quality. It's also important to be aware of occasional warm spells in early winter, which can cause sudden temperature fluctuations. During these times, using an aerator regularly can prevent oxygen depletion and protect the fish.
Third, reducing feeding frequency is necessary as temperatures drop. Fish should gradually transition from being fed three times a day to two times. Additionally, smaller fish under 10 cm in length should be intensively reared in ponds during early autumn to enhance their chances of surviving the winter. This careful management ensures that fish are in the best condition for the next growing season.
By focusing on these key areas—feed optimization, water quality maintenance, and feeding adjustments—fish farmers can significantly improve the health and growth of their fish during the fall, setting the stage for a successful year ahead.
