Currently, dentists check dental caries mainly by visual inspection and X-ray examination. But researchers at York University have found that low-cost infrared cameras with a simple laser system enable reliable early caries detection. Early dental caries selectively absorb different wavelengths, so we can perform signal processing with an infrared camera and determine the position and extent of the caries.

In one test, the researchers immersed human dental caries in an acid solution. They found that the technique could be detected two days after the caries occurred, and the traditional visual inspection found that the caries had been 10 days later.
