With a growing understanding of tumor pathobiology and the continuous advancement of treatment techniques, the concept, strategy, and model for cancer treatment have been constantly evolving. The approach to treating malignant tumors is now shifting toward a multidisciplinary model. From July 4th to 6th, 2009, at the "2009 Surgical Oncology Forum" hosted by Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University, experts gathered to discuss new ideas in the multidisciplinary treatment of liver cancer. Wang Yuehua, a specialist in hepatobiliary surgery, introduced innovative concepts that attracted significant attention from oncologists across the country.
More than 20 top oncologists and over 120 clinical professionals participated in the event, which was part of the National Continuing Medical Education Project sponsored by Xuanwu Hospital. The forum focused on the latest developments in liver, stomach, and colorectal cancers, emphasizing new treatment strategies and technologies. Experts highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in improving diagnosis and treatment outcomes for cancer patients, ultimately aiming to enhance quality of life and extend survival.
Wang Yuehua presented a structured framework for multidisciplinary liver cancer treatment, outlining six key objectives. These include targeting local tumors, intrahepatic metastases, systemic spread, chronic liver disease, immune function, and post-treatment recovery. According to this model, treatment methods are categorized into different levels based on the specific goals of each liver cancer case. This approach avoids simply combining multiple treatment methods but instead adopts a more strategic and integrated "collective treatment mode."
Experts at the conference emphasized that the new multidisciplinary model represents a significant shift in cancer care. It includes shared principles such as being comprehensive, systematic, standardized, personalized, dynamic, and cost-effective. Each discipline involved must have clear treatment goals, and the collaboration between specialties should be seamless to achieve common therapeutic aims. By integrating mathematical modeling and collaborative decision-making, the new model offers a more precise and effective way to manage liver cancer.
This emerging approach not only benefits liver cancer patients but also sets a valuable example for other types of cancer treatment. However, further development and refinement of this model require broader collaboration among liver cancer centers worldwide.
