Summer eggplant top dressing attention issues

As the old saying goes, “No harvest without income, and less income comes from fertilizer.” For eggplants to produce a high yield, they need proper nourishment. But how should you feed them during the hot summer months? Here's what you need to know: 1. **Right Amount** Eggplants require the most nitrogen, but in the summer heat, it’s important to apply it wisely. Urea application per acre should generally not exceed 30 kilograms. During hot seasons, urea breaks down quickly in the soil. Once the plants have absorbed what they need, the excess can be lost, especially in sandy soils where leaching is more common. Similarly, ammonium bicarbonate should be used at no more than 40 kg per acre. Over-application can lead to nutrient loss and even ammonia damage to the leaves and fruits of the eggplant. 2. **Application Method** Many farmers are used to applying chemical fertilizers with irrigation water, but this method isn’t ideal during the summer. High temperatures cause a lot of ammonia to evaporate, reducing the effectiveness of the fertilizer. Ammonium bicarbonate, in particular, is prone to causing ammonia toxicity in eggplants. The best approach is to use trenching or hole placement, and after top-dressing, make sure the soil covering the fertilizer is at least 5 cm thick to minimize evaporation of active ingredients. 3. **Balanced Combination** While eggplants need a lot of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are equally important. You shouldn’t just apply nitrogen every time you fertilize. During the fruiting stage, it’s recommended to apply a balanced compound fertilizer twice, with a total of at least 40 kg per mu (approximately 667 square meters) to ensure the plant gets all the nutrients it needs for healthy growth and maximum yield. By following these tips, you can optimize your eggplant fertilization strategy in the summer, leading to better results and healthier crops.
