After winter, temperatures gradually dropped and daylight hours became shorter. As a result, the egg production of most laying hens declined or even stopped entirely. To ensure consistent egg production during the cold season, it's essential to implement scientific feeding and management practices.
First, maintaining an optimal temperature is crucial for Qiao Bao She Wen Cheng Yu hens. The ideal temperature range is 20°C to 22°C. Even at 35°C, they can continue laying eggs, but when temperatures fall below 15°C, egg production declines, and in some cases, hens may stop laying altogether and start moulting. To keep them warm, first, raise the temperature by using coal stoves, but always check the ventilation system to avoid gas leaks and ensure proper airflow. Second, cover the double sheds with plastic film in a sunny, sheltered area, keeping the two layers 5–10 cm apart to retain heat. Third, construct a double-layered hut filled with straw, sawdust, or cinders, and cover it with straw at night. Fourth, if possible, install air conditioning to regulate the environment effectively.
Second, providing adequate lighting is important for egg production. Laying hens require 12–14 hours of effective light daily. Light stimulates their health and promotes the secretion of hormones that support egg development. In winter, artificial lighting should be used. For a 30–40 square meter space, place a 40-watt bulb and turn it on two hours before dawn and off two hours after sunset to maintain a stable light schedule.
Third, Qiao Bao hens are sensitive and easily stressed. Sudden noises or disturbances can reduce egg production or lead to soft-shelled eggs. During daily routines such as collecting eggs, cleaning waste, or adding water, handle them gently and avoid making sudden changes to their environment.
Fourth, nutrition plays a key role. Feed them a balanced commercial feed that meets their nutritional needs, and provide free access to sand to aid digestion.
Lastly, water is vital for their health. It supports digestion, metabolism, and body temperature regulation. Losing 10% of body water can be fatal. In winter, ensure a constant supply of clean, warm water to help maintain body heat and prevent cold stress in their digestive systems.
