Onion high-yielding cultivation techniques

High-Yield Onion Cultivation Techniques

1. Transplanting Seedlings. The ideal time to transplant onion seedlings is usually in mid-July, and it's best to plant them early if possible. Before transplanting, prepare the field by plowing and incorporating 4,000 kg of organic manure as base fertilizer, along with 30–50 kg of phosphate or compound fertilizer. Create furrows with a spacing of 60 cm between rows and 6 cm between plants, and dig furrows about 20 cm deep. This allows for approximately 15,000 plants per mu. Before planting, carefully lift the seedlings and shake off excess soil. Plant them according to their size—larger seedlings should be spaced more widely, while smaller ones can be planted slightly closer. Be sure to plant them shallowly, without burying the growth point (the heart) of the green onions.

2. Field Management. Proper management of Welsh onions involves watering, soil cultivation, and top dressing. After planting, during the summer season, avoid watering unless the weather is extremely dry. Focus on weeding and loosening the topsoil to encourage strong root development. Once autumn arrives, the leaves will begin to grow rapidly, so regular watering is essential. Water in the early morning and late evening to keep the soil consistently moist.

In the early stages of growth, cultivate the soil shallowly, and as the plants grow, increase the depth of cultivation. Avoid digging too close to the heart or leaves to minimize damage. From early August to mid to late September, perform four rounds of soil cultivation. After the first top dressing, apply a small amount of soil. Following the second top dressing, add 5 cm of soil. Before the third application, build up to 7 cm, and after the fourth round, raise the soil to 8 cm. You may also perform additional earthing up depending on the plant's condition.

Top dressing should be done in conjunction with watering. Apply nitrogen-rich fertilizer and supplement with phosphorus and potassium as needed. Typically, apply ammonium nitrate once every three months starting from early autumn, during the summer heat and after the White Dew period. Each application should include 15–20 kg of ammonium nitrate per mu.

3. Pest and Disease Control. To control onion thrips, spray a 40% dimethoate emulsion diluted at 1,500 times. For leaf miners, flood the area with water mixed with 90% trichlorfon at a 1,000 times dilution to kill the larvae. Downy mildew can be managed with a 75% chlorothalonil solution diluted at 800 times. For purple spot disease, use either a 65% Zineb solution diluted at 700 times or a 65% Kombat Zinc solution diluted at 600 times.
