Japan developed a surgical navigation system

Release date: 2010-10-25

Kochi University in Japan recently published a communique saying that the school's researchers have developed a surgical "navigation" system that can see through tissues such as lymph nodes and blood vessels during surgery. By using this system during surgery, the state of the above tissue can be clearly observed by means of a color image.
According to the bulletin, it is often difficult to confirm the location of tissues such as lymph nodes during cancer surgery. If you use this surgical "navigation" system, you can solve the above problem and treat the patient with minimal resection. According to the bulletin, a pigment called indigo green has the property of absorbing light after absorbing light. The research team led by Professor Koto Sato, a professor at Kochi University, used this characteristic of the pigment to first inject azure green into the lymph nodes of the human skin. Inside the blood vessels, and then irradiated from the outside with near-infrared rays, indocyanine green will illuminate in lymph nodes and blood vessels.
Because the light is invisible to the naked eye, the research team has developed an ultra-high sensitivity camera that captures weak light. Using the monitor to observe the color image captured by the camera, you can clearly see the glowing blood vessels, lymph nodes and surrounding organs, so as to accurately grasp the position of the relevant tissues and organs and perform surgery.
The researchers said that although the location of lymph nodes and blood vessels can be confirmed by radiation, this method can expose patients to weak radiation and the treatment site is therefore limited. The near-infrared and indocyanine green are harmless to the human body and can be used multiple times, and the burden on patients is greatly reduced.
According to reports, the medical department of Kochi University has used this system to successfully locate the location of lymph nodes in more than 100 breast cancer operations. In addition, the system can also be used to confirm the location of liver cancer, and is expected to be used in cardiac surgery.
