Young fruit tree branches five attention

Proper branch pulling is a critical technique in orchard management, especially during key growth periods. The early production phase (late March to early April) and the late growth period (late August to late September) are the main times for Lazhi, a traditional Chinese fruit cultivation method. During these periods, it's essential to pull branches, as those on the back tend to grow more vigorously. Timely summer pruning, such as bud rubbing and tip twisting, should be implemented to prevent excessive branching. Long-term branching can lead to weak tree vigor, as tender shoots consume too many nutrients and hinder canopy development. When selecting branches for pulling, focus on long branches over 50 cm in length. The central leader is usually not pulled unless there's a need to develop a new main branch or retrain the central leader. Weak trees should avoid this practice. For spindle-shaped trees, the lower branches should be longer than 100 cm, while middle main branches should exceed 70 cm. This ensures proper canopy expansion and balanced growth. Angle control is also important. Auxiliary branches should have a larger angle than the main branches, typically 80-90 degrees compared to 70-80 degrees for the main ones. Proper angle adjustment helps create a sparse, layered canopy. Branches should not overlap vertically or horizontally; they should be evenly distributed to maximize space and light exposure. When performing the actual pulling, soften the base of the branch before applying pressure to avoid cracking. Use a rope with some slack—tying it too tightly can damage the xylem. The tying position should allow the branch to remain straight after being pulled, promoting even growth without bending back. Lastly, consider using competitive shoots strategically. In densely planted orchards, these can act as backbone branches to encourage rapid growth. When pulling, guide them laterally to prevent them from splitting and ensure better structural support. This approach enhances tree health and productivity over time.
