Jiangbian Tongtang Yangqing Shrimp

Xu Guomin, a 36-year-old shrimp farmer from Yifeng Village in Fusheng Town, has built a successful aquaculture business by leveraging the natural resources of his hometown. Last year, he managed to generate an annual net income of over 100,000 yuan by cultivating green prawns on 110 mu of contracted farmland. His journey into aquaculture began as a passion, but it quickly turned into a profitable venture. Fusheng Town, known for its clean water and favorable environment, provided the perfect setting for Xu's shrimp farming. He started by raising green prawns along the levee of the Feng River, near his village. Over the past eight years, he expanded his operation significantly. In 2006, his revenue surpassed 100,000 yuan, marking a turning point in his career. Inspired by farmers from Huzhou who were successfully farming green prawns in local ponds, Xu saw an opportunity. With prices reaching 60-80 yuan per kilogram, he decided to take the plunge. He initially started with a small area near the river and gradually expanded his farm to 110 acres today. Scientific methods play a key role in his success. Xu is highly attentive to environmental factors, especially weather conditions that can affect shrimp growth. Thunderstorms and low-pressure systems often lead to "floating head" issues in shrimp, so he and his team stay up all night to monitor the ponds. To ensure optimal nutrition, he uses a balanced diet of soybean meal, fishmeal, and commercial feed, sourced from large processing plants. Selling the shrimp is just as important as raising them. Xu has established strong local connections, frequently traveling by motorcycle to the Baiguan wholesale market in Shangyu City to sell his fresh produce. His wife also helps by selling directly at the Dongguan farmers' market, just a 10-minute drive away. The freshness of his locally farmed shrimp makes them highly sought after in the market. For Xu, aquaculture is not just about profit—it’s about resilience. He acknowledges that the industry comes with both market and natural risks, but with dedication and careful management, it can be very rewarding. This year, he plans to further expand his farm and explore new opportunities, such as combining shrimp farming with recreational agriculture, offering visitors a chance to experience shrimp fishing firsthand.
