Jiangbian Tongtang Yangqing Shrimp

Xu Guomin, a 36-year-old shrimp farmer from Yifeng Village in Fusheng Town, has turned his passion for aquaculture into a profitable business. Last year, he successfully raised shrimp on a 110-mu (approximately 73 acres) farmland that he had contracted, achieving an annual net income of over 100,000 yuan. His success story began eight years ago when he first started farming green prawns along the levee of the Feng River, taking advantage of its clean water and favorable conditions. Initially, Xu was drawn to aquaculture out of personal interest. He noticed that farmers from Huzhou were making good profits by raising green prawns in small ponds, with prices reaching 60 to 80 yuan per kilogram. Inspired by this, he decided to try it himself. In the early days, he raised shrimp near the Feng River, not far from his village. Over time, his operation grew, and today, his farm spans 110 acres. Xu is a firm believer in scientific farming methods. He understands that weather conditions play a crucial role in shrimp growth. During thunderstorms, low pressure can cause shrimp to float to the surface, leading to potential losses. To prevent this, he and his team stay up all night to monitor the pond. Additionally, he carefully manages the feed, using a mix of soybean meal and fishmeal, which are processed at large feed mills to ensure high-quality nutrition for the shrimp. Selling the shrimp is just as important as raising them. Xu often rides his motorcycle to the Baiguan wholesale market in Shangyu City, where he sells directly to local traders. His wife also helps by driving to the Dongguan farmers' market, where she sells fresh shrimp. Because his shrimp are locally raised and much fresher than those from other sources, they are highly sought after in the Dongguan market. Xu believes that aquaculture comes with both market and natural risks, but with dedication and careful management, it can be very rewarding. Looking ahead, he plans to expand his farm further and integrate it with recreational agriculture, such as shrimp fishing activities, to create a more diversified and sustainable business model.
