Girdling is an essential horticultural technique used to improve fruit quality, increase yield, and regulate growth in various fruit trees. The timing and method of girdling vary depending on the species. For cherries, the best time to perform girdling is in mid-May. The girdle should be about 1/10th the thickness of the main trunk or branch and should heal within a month to avoid long-term damage.
Persimmon girdling is typically done in early June. The width of the girdle should be approximately 1/5th of the trunk or branch diameter, ensuring it heals during the growing season. This helps redirect nutrients toward fruit development without harming the tree.
For jujubes, mid-May is the ideal time for girdling. The girdle should be placed 3 cm above the root and up to 20 cm above the root collar. The girdling should occur when the bloom is between 40% and 100%, which helps maximize fruit set.
Apricot girdling is usually carried out in mid-June. The branch diameter should be around 1/25 to 1/30 of the trunk’s size, with a width of 0.2 cm. After making the cut, the wound should be cleaned and disinfected using 25% carbendazim diluted 100 times. Then, cover the wound with paper to prevent sap leakage and promote healing. If girdling is done one week before flowering, make sure to water the tree adequately beforehand to reduce stress.
Pomegranate girdling is best done in early May. On young trees, the girdle should be no more than 1/10th the thickness of the main trunk or branch. During early flowering, remove 2–3 strips of bark at the base of Wangshu or Dafu Yangzhi, where there are fewer flowers. The girdling width should be at least 4 cm to ensure effective nutrient redistribution.
For grapes, girdling is performed 3 cm below the node or on the mother twigs. Avoid removing too many branches from the same plant to prevent over-stressing the vine. Wrap the wounds with clean plastic film, and make the cuts 2–5 mm wide. Girdling can be applied at the beginning of flowering to reduce excessive blooming and increase fruit set. During the berry growth stage, girdling helps increase fruit size, while at the ripening stage, it can enhance sugar content and promote earlier maturity.
After girdling, proper post-management is crucial. Provide adequate fertilizer and irrigation, and monitor for pests and diseases. The resulting branches should be tied diagonally at a 45-degree angle and secured to supports. Tip pruning should be done to control leggy growth. In winter, the girdled branches should be pruned back to maintain tree health and productivity.
