Girdling is an essential horticultural technique used to improve fruit quality, increase yield, and regulate growth in various fruit trees. The timing and method of girdling vary depending on the species. For cherries, the best time to perform girdling is in mid-May. During the berry growth stage, girdling helps increase fruit size, while at the ripening stage, it can enhance sugar content and promote earlier maturity. After girdling, proper post-management is crucial. Provide adequate fertilizer and irrigation, and monitor for pests and diseases. The resulting branches should be tied diagonally at a 45-degree angle and secured to supports. Tip pruning should be done to control leggy growth. In winter, the girdled branches should be pruned back to maintain tree health and productivity.
