Genomics, analytics, artificial intelligence, and deep learning technologies are all entering this emerging field. According to Rock Health, although the amount of investment in the industry has decreased slightly last year, venture capital is still enthusiastic about digital healthcare, with an investment of $4.2 billion in 2016.
The industry is diverse, ranging from general-purpose medical applications for consumers to advanced clinical care programs that typically require FDA approval. The healthcare market is huge, and in 2015 the US healthcare market was over $3.2 trillion. Because the new government is undergoing legal and regulatory reforms, most observers are looking forward to further major changes.
We expect more changes in regulation, but we believe that the dramatic changes in industrial digitalization and the transformation to value-based healthcare will continue unabated. We will see the beginning of the next wave of technological innovations such as the Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) moving from consumer and commercial use to healthcare applications. Digital intervention
We have seen some new applications seeking to improve the health of patients in a clinically provable way. These digital interventions use health, behavioral, and related data to improve patient care options such as glucose levels, sleep status, weight, food intake, activity status, time information, and weather conditions.
Companies in this area are interested in Omada Health for diabetes prevention, WellDoc for type 2 diabetes, Pear Therapeutics for mental health, and Propeller Health for respiratory diseases. Sometimes for WellDoc, these interventions are FDA-approved therapies. Because these applications have a convincing clinical effect, they can improve the patient's recovery while reducing costs, so insurance companies begin to pay for it.
Pharmaceutical companies are also interested in combining digital interventions with their drugs to improve drug efficacy, segment their products, and engage directly with patients. For example, Proteus Digital Health has created an FDA-approved sensor that is embedded in a pill to track medication adherence. The company is working with Otsuka to develop a bundled treatment plan for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
